Dog Damaged the Stair Carpet a Week Before Moving House – Could We Save It

Moving house is stressful enough without discovering that your dog has left you with a badly damaged staircase just days before you’re due to hand the property over to its new owners.

That was exactly the situation facing one of our customers this week.

With only a week to go before moving out, everything should have been about packing boxes, final arrangements and getting ready for moving day. Unfortunately, their dog had other ideas and had attacked the carpet on the staircase, leaving significant and very noticeable damage behind.

The customer certainly didn’t want to hand over their home with a staircase that looked as though it had been mutilated by the family dog. Understandably, the new homeowners probably wouldn’t have been particularly impressed either.

So, with the clock ticking, they contacted The Carpet Repair Guys to see whether we could get them out of a rather awkward last-minute pickle.

Can Dog-Damaged Stair Carpet Be Repaired?

Pet damage is one of the most common types of carpet damage we are asked to repair. Dogs and cats can cause surprisingly severe damage in a very short space of time, particularly around stairs, doorways, thresholds and the edges of rooms.

The difficulty with a staircase is that you aren’t simply dealing with a flat piece of carpet in the middle of a room. Carpet is fitted around individual steps, risers and edges, and the construction of the staircase and the location of the damage can significantly affect the repair options available.

That’s why every job needs to be assessed individually.

Once we’d looked at the damage to this particular staircase, we were able to come up with a plan. Rather than the customer facing the expense, disruption and time involved in replacing the stair carpet immediately before moving home, we concentrated on repairing the damaged areas and getting the staircase back into a presentable condition.

An Emergency Carpet Repair Before Moving House

There was also another important factor with this job: time.

The customer wasn’t looking at a carpet repair they could get around to in a few months. They were moving out in approximately a week, and the damaged staircase needed dealing with before the new homeowners took possession of the property.

Situations like this are exactly why professional carpet repair can be so useful.

Replacing an entire carpet because of localised damage can involve choosing a replacement, arranging measurements, ordering carpet, waiting for availability and organising fitting. When you’re days away from moving house, that’s another major job most people could do without.

Where the existing carpet is suitable for repair, concentrating specifically on the damaged section can provide a much more practical solution.

In this case, we attended, carried out the necessary work and transformed what had been a very obvious problem into a staircase the customer could confidently leave behind.

Problem solved, customer out of their pickle, and one less thing to worry about before moving day.

Why Pet Damage Shouldn’t Automatically Mean a New Carpet

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding carpet damage is that once a dog or cat has attacked it, the entire carpet has to be replaced.

That isn’t necessarily true.

At The Carpet Repair Guys, we regularly deal with carpets that have been scratched, pulled, chewed or damaged by pets. Depending on the carpet, the severity and location of the damage and the donor material available, there may be several ways of approaching the repair.

Some repairs may require donor carpet. Others may involve reconstructing or securing damaged areas. The important thing is to assess the individual situation rather than assuming replacement is the only answer.

Of course, not every damaged carpet can be restored perfectly, and we will never promise an invisible repair where that isn’t realistically achievable. The age and condition of the carpet, the type of pile, previous wear and the quality of any available donor material can all affect the finished appearance.

Our aim is always to provide an honest assessment and achieve the best possible repair under the circumstances.

Selling Your Home? Don’t Ignore Carpet Damage Until the Last Minute

This job is also a useful reminder for anyone approaching completion on a house sale.

When you’ve lived with a small area of carpet damage for months or even years, it’s surprisingly easy to stop noticing it. But when you’re preparing to hand the property over to somebody else, those damaged areas can suddenly become very obvious.

Iron burns, pet damage, pulled carpets, damaged stairs and other localised problems don’t necessarily require an entire room or staircase to be recarpeted.

If you’re moving home and have damaged carpet, it’s worth finding out whether it can be professionally repaired before automatically arranging replacement.

And ideally, don’t wait until the removal van is outside!

Carpet Repairs for Dog and Pet Damage

Pet-related carpet damage comes in many different forms. We see dogs digging or scratching at carpet, cats pulling at fibres, carpet being damaged around closed doors and pets repeatedly attacking the same section of a staircase.

Sometimes the visible damage is only part of the problem. The carpet may also have been pulled away from the gripper or stretched, and excessive scratching can seriously disturb the pile and backing.

For that reason, photographs are extremely useful when initially assessing a pet-damaged carpet. We normally need to see both the damaged area itself and the surrounding carpet so that we can understand the extent of the problem and determine what repair options may be available.

Another Carpet Saved – and a House Ready for Its New Owners

For this customer, the timing made this more than just another carpet repair.

They had seven days until they were moving out, a staircase damaged by their dog and new homeowners who understandably expected the property to be handed over in a reasonable condition.

They needed a solution quickly.

We came up with a repair plan, completed the work and got the staircase back into shape ready for moving day.

That’s one of the things we enjoy about specialist carpet repair. Sometimes we’re fixing a burn that’s been there for years. Other times, we’re walking into somebody’s mini-emergency when they need a solution quickly.

Either way, our job is the same: look at the damage, work out what’s realistically possible and find the best way to repair it.

At The Carpet Repair Guys, we specialise exclusively in carpet repairs, including dog-damaged carpets, pet damage, stair carpet repairs, iron burns, pulls, damaged doorways and other localised carpet damage throughout London, Kent, Essex and Surrey.

If your dog has decided to redesign your carpet — particularly when you’re only days away from moving house — don’t automatically assume you need to replace it.

Send us clear photographs of the damage and surrounding carpet, and we’ll assess whether we can get you out of your own carpet-related pickle.
