This week, we were called to one of London’s most prestigious venues — the Royal Lancaster Hotel, overlooking Hyde Park — to assess and repair burn damage to the ballroom carpet following an incident with a pyrotechnic machine during an event.
The Setting
The Lancaster is a five-star venue, hosting luxury weddings, major corporate events and high-profile functions year-round. The ballroom itself is vast, and the carpet covers hundreds of square metres — all fully stuck down and fitted in large, seamless sections.
When something goes wrong in a space like this, you can’t just swap a rug. You need specialists.
The Damage
In this case, a malfunctioning effects machine had sent hot sparks onto the floor, leaving six visible burn marks — one of which was slightly deeper than the others. Although the damage was confined to a small section, the challenge was how to put it right without disturbing the surrounding carpet — or making things worse.
Our Approach
After carrying out a full inspection, we advised against patching the carpet outright. Why?
- The carpet is fully adhered and laid in large panels
- A patch repair could cause lifting or rippling over time
- Even a like-for-like replacement section wouldn’t visually match, due to wear and age
Instead, we recommended our advanced blending and infill technique, using donor carpet taken from hidden areas (like inside storage cupboards) to feather and disguise the damage.
This method allows us to minimise the appearance of the burns, without invasive work or visible seams. It’s not always perfect — but in a situation like this, it’s often the best and most discreet solution available.
